The recital that impressed me for the quiet dignity of its methodical and reposeful alap in raga Eman was provided on the sitar by Delhi’s Sharmistha Sen. Really speaking hers is not an utterance in any new cut or style. In fact, it revives and recasts the cherished old ‘baaj’ of sitar playing one used to hear from the late Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan. Sharmistha’s alap founded on shapely and symmetrical arches and canopies all along the way, evoked a very placid, agreeable impression, duly indicative as it was of her artistic sensibility and temperament.
